Solid vs engineered timber flooring: which suits your home?

Timber flooring is among the most-used surfaces in a home. The wrong choice costs heavily in repair; the right one lifts comfort and value.

Solid timber pros & cons

Pros: natural grain, multiple sandings (100-year life), value. Cons: dearer, moisture-sensitive, pro install, not ideal on damp ground floors.

Engineered timber pros & cons

Pros: ~60–70% of solid price, stable (less movement), straight onto slab, DIY-able. Cons: limited refinish (1–2 times), less warm sound.

Adelaide recommendation

Ground floor: engineered (stable in moisture). Upper floors: budget-dependent. High budget + long value: solid (Blackwood, Jarrah). Wet areas (bath, laundry): hybrid flooring instead.
