Heritage timber restoration: how it differs from ordinary renovation

Many 1920–1950s Adelaide homes use traditional timber and hand joinery. Restoring them takes both skill and heritage awareness.

Heritage listing and the rules

In SA, buildings on the State or Local Heritage Register need Heritage Approval (Section 49 permit) with a heritage-architect-reviewed method before timber repair starts.

Traditional joinery demands

Mortise-and-tenon needs hand work not modern connectors; timber must match the original species and era; surface systems must follow period paint (lime wash, milk paint).

MEL ONE heritage experience

Our joiners know Adelaide period forms (Federation Bungalow, Inter-War Californian Bungalow) and deliver compliant, faithful restoration.
